What is a ‘NATURAL’ Ceylon Sapphire?
Nothing compares to a natural Ceylon sapphire. So, what is a natural Ceylon sapphire?
A natural Ceylon sapphire is the corundum mined and cut, faceted, and polished in Sri Lanka (formerly known as Ceylon). Faceted and polished in Sri Lanka? Yes. This is so as a result of the long term policy for many decades of succeeding Governments of Sri Lanka which banned and still bans the export of “rough” sapphire i.e. corundum.
A natural Ceylon sapphire is one that has not been “interfered” with. Allow us to explain this. When ‘rough’ corundum (out of which emerges the gem sapphire) is discovered in a mine in Sri Lanka, it is expected to be offered for sale in a short time and the likelihood is, the highest bid (our representative could be among the bidders) would be accepted by the owner.
It is more like an auction for insiders only. What is meant by this statement is that curious onlookers are not invited for reasons of security and privacy. Sometimes, the owner opts to cut and polish it on his own and this may bring about a satisfactory or even a massive profit.
This natural Ceylon sapphire is that which has been taken out, dug out of Sri Lankan (Ceylonese) soil. It has been cut and polished in Sri Lanka keeping in mind the fact that ‘sapphire rough’ (a colloquial term for the uncut corundum) cannot be legally exported out of Sri Lanka.
Yet, I’ve been looking into “leading !” Ceylon sapphire dealers websites who describe that they bring the rough in to U.S.A and cut it themselves. They have photographs shown on their website that display this blue colored sapphire rough that would be cut in their factory.
Really! I suggest you look (surf) into any company that claims to do this and keep track. Then get back to see if they’ve withdrawn this ‘fact’ because The Ceylon Sapphire Company exposed their untenable claim.
